We were first intrigued by the MGM decals on the top and front of the case, how heavy it was, and by the name <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0432482\/?ref_=nmawd_ov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ray June<\/a> inscribed on the lid. Inside this custom case was a meticulously selected collection of glass and gelatin photographic filters. Ray June, ASC, it turns out, was one of Hollywood\u2019s most important <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/sim_american-cinematographer_1943-04_24_4\/page\/132\/mode\/2up?q=%22Ray+June%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">golden-age cinematographers<\/a>, known particularly for his work at MGM. He began working in the film developing lab, then, through circumstances beyond his control, became head of the laboratory and eventually the main cameraman for the studio as well. June made his first sound feature, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0019630\/?ref_=nm_flmg_t_110_cin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alibi<\/a>\u201d in 1929 for United Artists. He also received two Academy Award nominations for his work as a cinematographer during his tenure at United Artists, one for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0021622\/?ref_=nmawd_i_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arrowsmith<\/a>\u201d in 1931, and the other for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0026097\/?ref_=nmawd_i_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Barbary Coast<\/a>\u201d in 1935. Around 1937, June moved to MGM where he remained for much of the balance of his career. June was known as the consummate problem solver, and was the go-to guy to photograph the most intricate and difficult scenes. He was nominated for a third Oscar in 1957 for his work on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0050419\/?ref_=nmawd_awd_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Funny Face<\/a>\u201d starring Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire.
