The Nagra IV-L is a 1/4” reel-to-reel analog monaural magnetic audio tape recorder designed by Stefan Kudelski and built in Switzerland by the Nagra Company. Renowned for the top quality engineering and sound recording quality, the Nagra tape recorders were embraced by the motion picture, television, radio, and music recording industries. These recording devices operate with the precision of a Swiss watch, and remain one of the finest audio recorders out there. The Nagra IV-L was introduced in 1968 as a successor to the world-renowned Nagra III. The IV-L added two microphone inputs, on-board crystal sync, and automatic microphone gain control. Unique features of Nagra tape recorders include the ability to operate in any position, extremely rugged metal alloy housing, modular electronic components, and the ability to run by either internal batteries or external AC power supply. I have inspected this unit to make sure that it records on both channels and at all speeds; that it plays back through both the headphone jack and the internal speaker; that the modulometer works in all of its functions; that the pilotone flag and speed and power flag are working; and that the rewind, playback, and recording controls work properly. While overall in excellent condition, this Nagra IV-L is missing the two reel hold-down nuts. The battery compartment had a leak in it at one time, but has been cleaned and is in working condition. This gently used Nagra IV-L would make a wonderful addition to any filmmaking setup or audio recording studio.
