One of the many vintage lenses that are currently in the process of being restored is this remarkable Goerz Hypar 3in f 3.5 lens in Bell & Howell 2709 mount. The lens was found to be in clean used condition, with no fungus, cleaning marks, or scratches on the elements. A general cleaning, lubrication, and collimation was all that was required.
The C.P. Goerz company dates back to 1886 when it was founded in Germany by Carl Paul Goerz as a mail order supplier of mathematical and drawing tools for schools. By 1887, Goerz had begun producing photographic lenses. The company expanded to the United States in 1905, and incorporated as the C.P. Goerz American Optical Company in 1910. Goerz lenses were hailed as the finest available, evening winning a grand prize at the 1904 World’s Fair. The Kino Hypar series of cine lenses was adapted from an earlier series of portrait lenses around 1916. The Goerz cine lenses were popular for their flatness of field, sharpness of image, and speed.
