A First Look at the Super Baltars

I couldn’t wait to go through and look more closely at the Super Baltar lenses, so I spent some time this week doing just that. What I have here is a set of 6 Bausch & Lomb Super Baltar lenses in Mitchell MK II mount with BNCR adapters, in 20mm, 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, 75mm, and 100mm focal lengths. Clearly this set of lenses has been sitting in storage for a very long time, so there was a great deal of prehistoric grease that needed to be cleaned out of the focusing threads and replaced. Someone had tried to do repairs on several of the lenses, but clearly didn’t know what they were doing.

The 35mm and 75mm needed some minor machine work to repair the focus guide assemblies. On the 25mm and 50mm, the Mitchell MK II mount and BNCR adapters were installed incorrectly, so that was repaired. The other lenses just needed general servicing. These have clearly been used and the glass is not pristine, but overall they are in excellent condition. There are a few specks of dust between elements on some of the lenses and one of them has an iris that needs cleaning. I may or may not get to that work, but in the meantime they are now available for sale. More pictures to come in a week or so
