I acquired this Fries 35R3 camera as part of a retired cinematographer’s kit and held onto it for a while to play with it as it just had so many lens mounts! Now that my curiosity is satisfied, I began to go through the camera to make it ready for sale. The interesting thing I noticed as I worked on the camera, based on the way the ground glass assembly is built on this camera, it appears that this camera started out as a 35R pellicle mirror reflex. Based on the machine work I see, it was likely returned to Fries Engineering and converted to a spinning mirror reflex 35R3. The camera was used by its previous owner for many years shooting second unit inserts, animation, and high speed work with great success.
As I took an in depth look at the various included lens mounts, I became concerned about how they were light trapped. It’s probably overkill, as the camera was used as is for many years, but I decided to add two additional light traps to the face of the camera and ground glass assembly, just so I am absolutely certain this won’t turn out to be a problem. To make for the most versatile shooting options, this Fries 35R3 comes with PL, Nikon, Panavision, and BNCR lens mounts, all of which are easily interchangeable. And now with a new, improved light trap! The camera is fitted with a Lynx Robotics C-50M crystal motor and an accompanying Lynx Robotics C-50 Battery Eliminator. In my opinion, the Lynx Robotics motor is far more versatile than the stock Fries motor, and the included battery eliminator lets you power the camera off of standard wall power.
To complete the package, two extremely clean 1000’ magazines and one extremely clean 400’ magazine are included. The camera and accessories are packed in nicely made shipping cases for easy transport. The camera has been fully serviced and is in excellent working condition. While the camera itself is in A condition, the mirrored shutter shows signs of heavy use and is in B- condition.
