Repairing an ARRI Follow Focus 2 for an ARRI 35 BL 4S motion picture camera

Repairing the ARRI BL 4S Follow Focus

I am taking a couple of days off this week, but before I do, I wanted to go through the accessories that come with the ARRI BL 4S camera I began repairing last week. The first thing I looked at was the follow focus unit, which would not … follow focus? What I discovered was that it had been left somewhere that it had been exposed to moisture, and while it wasn’t frozen up, it was very, very stiff. I didn’t realize how many parts there were in an ARRI Follow Focus 2 until I took this one apart, but it’s a whole lot of bits and pieces! I took the whole thing apart, cleaned all the pieces, replaced the belt, re-lubricated everything, and put it all back together so it would follow focus once again. Success!

  1. Hi, do you know where I can find the little belt inside the follow focus wheel? Mine disintegrated unfortunately.

    1. I was lucky and had a spare belt on hand, but they are a standard metric pitch cog belt. I don’t know what the pitch is off hand and my service manual doesn’t seem to say. You might try contacting ARRI New York and see if they have any of those parts left, or if they can at least tell you the specifics about that belt. It’s been a long time since I have shopped for any belts of the this type, but the last time I did, I bought them from https://www.wmberg.com/.

  2. Hi I just found your article this morning after trying to repair this same exact follow focus. Wish me luck lol
