Cinerama Slate

Cinerama Slate

I wanted to share one more truly amazing item from John Hora’s collection before the end of the year. John was involved in a project in 2012, along with fellow cinematographer Douglas Knapp and director David Strohmaier, filming a three-panel Cinerama travelog about Los Angeles in the original Cinerama style. Additionally John was part of the team that restored Cinerama camera #3 to preserve its history and technology. This allowed the filmmakers to use this vintage equipment in the filming of their travelog. This slate is from the sequence they shot of the Battleship Iowa in San Pedro. The slate is in pristine condition, along with its original case. This travelog was titled “In the Picture” and was released as part of a DVD/Blu-ray collection called “The Best of Cinerama” in 2016. A documentary titled “The Last Days of Cinerama” was also included on the DVD, and features interviews and behind the scenes footage of this 2012 travelog. A write-up about “The Best of Cinerama” release was published on in70mm.com, and an interview with cinematographer Douglas Knapp about the production can be found on ProductionHUB.
