While I continue my long and protracted battle with an Arri BL 4S, I wanted to take a moment to wish everyone a Happy Star Wars Day. As they say, May the 4th be with you! This got me to thinking about the ongoing work I have been doing for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on the restoration of the DykstraFlex. For those of you who have missed it, this was the motion control camera system that revolutionized the way we photographed spaceships, planets, Death Stars, etc., and brought much of the iconic imagery in Star Wars to life. I was able to replace a section of the machine that was missing, and make enough repairs that the Dykstra Flex could be exhibited at the Academy’s Galactic Innovations event in 2019. Restoration was completed on the camera itself last year, and there are still a few things left to be done on the track system and crane. In the meantime, I leave you with a link back to all of the repair work I have done on the DykstraFlex for your perusal: https://bit.ly/3WnWOyI
